By joining the biggest community of bird lovers in Australia, you can help us make a positive impact on the future of our native birdlife. The members of BirdLife Australia, along with our supporters and partners, have been powerful advocates for native birds and the conservation of their habitats since 1901.

We are also the meeting ground for everyone with an interest in birds from the curious backyard observer to the dedicated research scientist. It doesn’t matter what your interest in birds is or how much you know about them, your membership will offer you the opportunity to increase your awareness and enjoyment.

Bird Search

Although birds are usually quite easy to see, often they are more difficult to identify. You may have had the briefest glimpse or heard a snatch of its song, or perhaps it was a bird you have never seen before. The best place to look for it is here.

You will discover the remarkable variety of birds that occur across Australia. With stunning images of featured species and some recordings of their songs and calls, you are sure to find that mystery bird, or learn more about species you already know.

BirdLife East Gippsland

BirdLife East Gippsland is a regional branch of BirdLife Australia, promoting the appreciation, understanding and conservation of birds and their habitats.

The BirdLife East Gippsland region covers the East Gippsland and Wellington Shires in Victoria’s east, and includes some of the state’s most magnificent wilderness areas.  It encompasses the extensive waterways of the Gippsland Lakes, 90 Mile Beach, the iconic Snowy River region, extensive old-growth forests, alpine meadows and the last free-flowing wild rivers of southeast Australia.

BirdLife East Gippsland conducts birding outings and surveys every Monday outside school summer holidays and some public holidays, and also runs several birding camps each year. A number of additional projects involve regular monitoring of birds at selected sites.

The club newsletter, The Chat, is published four times a year and is also available online. Prospective members are welcome to join us on outings to see how we operate and if our branch meets their needs before officially joining.

How to Join Us

Membership of BirdLife East Gippsland is automatically granted to members of BirdLife Australia whose postal address is within the Shires of East Gippsland and Wellington, and to other BirdLife Australia members who nominate BirdLife East Gippsland as their branch of preference.

There is no additional fee for BirdLife East Gippsland membership. Membership of BirdLife Australia allows access to all activities throughout Australia, including camps, tours, seminars and special events. Click here for details on how to join BirdLife Australia online.
