By joining the biggest community of bird lovers in Australia, you can help us make a positive impact on the future of our native birdlife. The members of BirdLife Australia, along with our supporters and partners, have been powerful advocates for native birds and the conservation of their habitats since 1901.

We are also the meeting ground for everyone with an interest in birds from the curious backyard observer to the dedicated research scientist. It doesn’t matter what your interest in birds is or how much you know about them, your membership will offer you the opportunity to increase your awareness and enjoyment.

Birdlife Australia would be delighted to welcome you as a new member and we look forward to sharing our news and achievements with you throughout the coming year.

Discovery Centre

Interactive, Interpretive, Incredible

The BirdLife Discovery Centre is an interactive interpretive hub where we provide opportunities for people to learn about and engage with birds in their natural habitat. It is located in the Newington Armory – formerly the Royal Australian Navy Armaments Depot in the Parklands at Sydney Olympic Park.

The BirdLife Discovery Centre offers a variety of ways for people to learn about, see and engage with birds and their habitats. Numerous resources including presentations, kits, educational models and tools are also available to support others in the community interested in teaching or learning about birds.

We even have birds that are film stars at the Discovery Centre. You can see our resident pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles on the nest using EagleCAM, a unique technology set up that gives bird lovers, researchers and scientists 24-hour access into the lives of our nesting sea-eagles and allows us to investigate their habitat, habits and how we can help them survive long term.

For a fun-filled, family friendly day that has activities for bird lovers of all ages, make a date to visit the BirdLife Discovery Centre.

Activities

We have an extensive program of activities throughout the year, including birdwatching with experts for the whole family, guided walks, workshops on bird identification, painting and photography, and a free weekly bird tour around the Newington Armory. We also offer technical and advanced birding workshops for BirdLife Australia members, professionals and people with birding experience.

Discovery Bird Centre in Newington Armory

History

Located in the Newington Armory in the Parklands at Sydney Olympic Park, the Discovery Centre involved the adaptive reuse of 4 heritage buildings over 250m² for the purposes of administration, library and interpretive facilities. Adjoining the Newington Nature Reserve - which is of significant environmental value - the facility will provide an additional area of interest for the increasing number of visitors to the parklands. Importantly, it reinforces the partnership between the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) and BirdLife Australia in engaging the community and promoting key messages on the value of birds and their habitats.
